THE COLLEGE EXPLORER

College Decisions Coming Back Already!

Seniors who were organized enough to submit their applications early are being rewarded with early college decisions – including scholarship offers!  As of November 28th, 26 Magellan clients have received college admission letters so far, and we eagerly await more good news!  We detail a few more metrics in this post.

For students who still need to submit applications, here’s some useful information:

Focused on Rankings?  Know What You’re Reading!
Sometimes people focus on college rankings because they don’t really know where else to start.  Rankings may tell you some information, but they don’t tell you which schools are a good fit for your high school student.  The University of Illinois details some of the controversies associated with college rankings here.  Here’s an alternative starting point:  use the College Board’s Big Future College Search function, or the Colleges That Change Lives website.

Upcoming Presentations
We have college search presentations coming up in January at private homes in West LA, and West Hills, and in February in Glendale and Westlake Village.  Please contact Evelyn for more details.

On Thursday, January 12 at 7 pm Diana Hanson will present an informational session with details on financial aid and the FAFSA at the Santa Monica Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

On Thursday, January 19 at 11 am, and again on Monday, February 6 at 6 pm, Evelyn will present a session about college costs, scholarships and financial planning at the Agoura Hills Library (29901 Ladyface Ct, Agoura Hills) with financial advisor Melody Mossayi.

Evelyn will start a five-part monthly series at Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills on Thursday, January 19.  Some presentations will be for both students and parents; some will be for just students, with activities and handouts for 10th and 11th graders.  More information to come on this!
