It’s time – time to think about summer programs!
Your high school student doesn’t have to do an organized summer program, but it’s better if s/he does something more interesting than hanging out at the mall or at the beach! Summer programs range from expensive to FREE (check out these FREE one-week business programs at the University of Houston or this FREE engineering program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute – all expenses including transportation are sponsored!!)
Here are a handful of short, one-week summer programs that focus on writing:
- Juniper Institute at UMass, Amherst: http://www.umass.edu/juniperinstitute/
- Sarah Lawrence College, Summer Writer’s Workshop: http://www.slc.edu/ce/pre-college/summer/workshop/
- Reynolds Workshop at Denison University: http://reynolds.denison.edu/about/
- Barnard Liberal Arts Intensives include some writing-related choices: http://barnard.edu/precollege/summer-in-the-city/programs/liberalarts
- Summer at Georgetown Creative Writing Institute: http://scs.georgetown.edu/programs/300/creative-writing
- Susquehanna University Advanced Writer’s Workshop: http://www.susqu.edu/about/writersworkshop.asp
Looking for a longer program or different subjects?
- Try Skidmore’s five-week program, with courses in studio arts, humanities, natural and social sciences: http://www.skidmore.edu/precollege/
- Or try Wake Forest’s LENS program, 3 weeks of focusing on sustainability from different interdisciplinary angles: http://lens.wfu.edu/
There are also programs locally:
- Woodbury’s 7-week summer program, offering courses in filmmaking, fashion design, psychology, public speaking and more
- USC’s 2-week and 4-week programs with courses in architecture, public health, entrepreneurship, journalism and more
- UCLA’s summer institutes for high school students range from Model UN to architecture to nanoscience!
