Feature Article: Start With Your College Advisor Early
Your friends with high school seniors may seem a little more frazzled lately, if their student just started looking at colleges, and hasn’t yet started writing college essays. Exploring and applying to colleges on top of a tough senior year schedule plus extra-curriculars is a huge burden for a 17-year old, and frequently the whole family ends up stressed out for the whole fall semester.
When we start working with students in 10th or 11th grades, we stretch out the college search, because squeezing it all into three months is a recipe for a big headache. No matter when you start, the process involves searching for and visiting colleges, deciding where to apply, brainstorming on essay topics, filling out applications (sometimes many of them – all asking for the same information!). We start year (or more) in advance, and create a personalized timeline so that everyone – students and parents – know exactly what needs to be done, and when. There’s no need to freak out during those crucial fall months, because we’ve been working together for months to create the student’s action plan.
When we work with students starting in their 10th or 11th grade years, we can also help ensure that they are taking the best academic courses, and help plan for summer programs that will enhance their competitiveness down the road. We can also spend a little bit of extra time and effort looking for those hidden gems – colleges that fit the student academically and socially – that will also help you make your child’s education more affordable with merit-based institutional aid.
Bottom line – the earlier you start working with a college advisor, the better!
