Preparing for the Next Step
(Don’t Take the Summer Off!)

For students who have just completed their junior year of high school, the next few months are critical.  They should spend time over the summer refining their college list, starting their personal statements and beginning their applications.  All of this can be done before school starts, when the pressure of new classes, new teachers and extra-curricular activities will mount.  The bottom line: spending time over the summer on the college search will reduce stress for both students and families during the fall.

common app 2To that end, Magellan College Counseling will host a Common Application boot camp on Saturday, August 3 (1:00 to 3:30 pm) OR Sunday, August 4 (3:00 to 5:30 pm).  During this hands-on workshop, rising seniors will open their Common App accounts and get a jump start on their applications.  These workshops are open to rising seniors only, and are FREE for Magellan College Counseling comprehensive clients, $150 for all others.  For more information and to RSVP, please visit this page.

Quick Tips for 10th and 11th Graders
Read during summer!  This is a great way to prepare for upcoming standardized tests.  If you are interested in group SAT/ACT test prep courses or in-home private tutoring, please call (877-5-MAGGIE (877-562-4443)) for a referral.  If you are interested in practice tests, I know several companies on the Westside and in the San Fernando Valley that will offer them during the summer.

Visit colleges during the summer!  Even if you can’t fly out of town, visit local colleges, like Loyola Marymount, USC or UCLA.  Take the official tour, and talk to students on campus.  You can read my impressions of the colleges I have toured (inside California and outside of California).

Create your resume NOW.  Keep track of all of your volunteer, extra-curricular and work activities.  Make sure to count all of your volunteer activities, both in school and out of school!

Is your teenager unmotivated, either in or out of school?  Check out my colleague Hayden Lee, who is a Certified Academic Life Coach. Hayden helps students find their passion and act on it, which in turn improves their chance at being accepted to the college of their choice.

Host a “College Admissions Process” Seminar!
Are your kids in 9th, 10th or 11th grades?  You can host a free “College Admissions 101” seminar at your home!  Your friends who are going through the same college admissions anxiety will thank you! Let me answer questions, dispel rumors and share some thoughts about colleges that could be a great fit for your students.  Call or e-mail for more information.
