School Profiles

Colleges evaluate students in the context of what is available to them at their school.  Your child’s high school counselor will send a document called the School Profile with his/her transcript.  Learn more about School Profiles in this post.

Tips for Juniors and Sophs!

Upcoming Presentations (ALL FREE!!)

  • Saturday, May 13, 1:30 pm:  Evelyn will give a general overview of the college admissions process at an office in Westlake Village.  Please RSVP on the Facebook site.
    p.s. Come early and bring documents you need to shred!  The shredding truck will be there until 1!
  • Tuesday, May 16, 6:30 pm:  Magellan hosts an informal “College and Cold Cuts” at Lovi’s Deli, 24005 Calabasas Road, Calabasas.  Please RSVP on the Facebook site.
  • Are you interested in hosting a presentation?  If you have a group of 6 or more families we are happy to come to you and give an overview of college admissions and/or financial aid.  We can be anywhere in the Greater Los Angeles or Boston areas.  We’re also planning presentations in Baltimore and Richmond this fall.  Just let us know!

Parent Corner

  • Did you miss our Financial Aid webinar?  You can watch it here.
  • Are you considering working with an independent educational consultant or college advisor?  Here’s a short post with some questions you should ask before you sign the contract.
  • If you have a junior (Class of 2018) student, Magellan is now offering both our comprehensive college counseling plan (35 hours) as well as our popular 20-hour mini-plan.  Call or e-mail us to learn more about how we can make your soon-to-be-senior’s college application process more organized and less stressful.
  • We have begun signing contracts for sophomores (Class of 2019).  Reduce everyone’s stress by starting early!  The mini-plan will be available for this class in March of next year.

College Admissions Testing

  • Next ACT: June 10 (register by May 5)
  • Next SAT: June 3 (register by May 9)
  • NEW for the Classes of 2018 and 2019: There will be an SAT on August 26 (this is the first time they have offered it in August).  REGISTER ASAP as locations are limited.
  • Khan Academy provides free SAT prep! Link your College Board account (everyone who took the PSAT has an account) with Khan Academy.
  • Quesbook has free ACT prep with daily question sets.
  • Call us for tutor and test prep referrals

Admissions Seminar
For Friends

Are your friends starting to think about (read: get anxious about!) college?  Please get in touch if you are interested in hosting a college admissions information seminar at your home.  We can tailor our presentation for parents of 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th grade students, or a combination.
