Agoura High School College Counseling

Agoura High School College Counseling

Agoura High School College Counseling is available… but is it right for your student?

Agoura High School is the largest high school in the Las Virgenes Unified School District and serves the Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Westlake Village, Woodland Hills and West Hills areas. The high school offers free college counseling services to its students, as do most California public high schools.

What You Need to Know About Agoura High School College Counseling

Your student will receive college counseling and advice from a member of Agoura High’s counseling staff. Currently, there are 5 full-time and 1 half-time guidance counselors available for the entire student body. Each counselor is assigned a selection of students based on a student’s last name. The introductory session, where the counselor meets your child and gets to speak with them about planning for college, is typically during the beginning of their first fall semester at Agoura. However, Agoura student enrollment is high at 2,179, and your child’s

will work with more than 300 students at the same time.

Agoura counselors must fill several roles. They work as guidance counselors, behavioral counselors, and college counselors. While their intention is to serve every child, the school’s limited staffing for such a large student body can mean that Agoura High’s college counselors may be unable to pay enough attention to all of their students. An Agoura High college counselor may spend an average of 30 to 40 minutes with a student in their entire high school career.

Your son or daughter has done well at Agoura High School. You’ve made the right decisions for your child’s future, and now comes the biggest one: preparing for college.

Soon you’ll invest more time and possibly thousands of dollars in your child’s education.

You want the best for your student, and that means getting into the college that fits them best. Many parents have this dream for their kids. It begins with helping your child prepare properly for college, having as many college choices as possible, and ultimately choosing the right college.

How can you accomplish these important goals given the current Agoura High School college counseling program?

Start Planning for College Early

Agoura High School students should start thinking about college counseling long before their senior year starts, and this means planning for college at the right time. That planning needs to include:

  • Selecting the right classes to get into the college they want to attend and starting the process as early as the 9th or 10th grade.
  • Preparing for and taking SAT and ACT tests at the right time.
  • Researching and preparing to apply for college financial aid.
  • Researching colleges and building their list during 11th grade.
  • Completing a first draft of their college essay before senior year starts.

And this is just the beginning.

Agoura High School college counselors are on a 9 to 10-month contract. Like most public school employees, they don’t work during the summer, so they aren’t able to counsel students during the important months before senior year begins. Your student needs a college advisor they can speak to when they need help, including over the summer.

So how will this 2-month “down time” impact your child, who is competing with thousands of other students to get into the same good colleges?

The Answer: Private College Counseling

Professional college counseling services grew from this need. Magellan College Counseling features college counselors whose sole objective is to help students get into the right college.

This relationship is based on matching the right counselor to the right child, and not by assigning your child at random or based on a last name. So we begin with learning about your student. We want to know his or her interests, aspirations, hopes and aptitudes. Only then do we match your child with one of our counselors.

Each of our college counselors has her own specialties, including STEM, English/humanities, athletics, engineering and more. And each counselor on our team is a member of two or more professional college counseling organizations, and we adhere to their high ethical standards. We also visit dozens of colleges every year to see how they will fit our clients. Together, our team has personally visited over 300 colleges and universities. Most public high school counselors lack the time and budget to visit colleges or attend professional development conferences.

Magellan college counselors only work with a handful of students each admissions cycle. Preparing for college is not a simple process, and we make sure we give your student the time and attention he or she deserves.

At Magellan College Counseling, we’re there during every step of the college application process. It starts with our hearing your son’s or daughter’s hopes and dreams and it continues all the way until they get their college acceptance envelopes and make their college selection.

Our counselors are expert at helping students who are frustrated with Agoura High School college counseling to get into the colleges and universities that are right for them. We’d be thrilled to do this for your child, too.
