Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN

Vanderbilt University is a medium-sized comprehensive university with four major divisions: Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Music and Education.  About 40% of students double major at this very intensely academic institution – located in the heart of Nashville, TN.

The Blair School of Music is home to about 220 undergraduate students, and has majors and minors in multiple music disciplines, including music composition, and Vanderbilt students who are not majoring or minoring can participate in music ensembles.  Nashville is, of course, “Music City,” so those who want to perform have abundant opportunities to practice their craft!  The Peabody College of Education and Human Development offers 34 undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of topics related to education and psychology.  Again, location is key; students interested in classroom teaching will find themselves in a local classroom within a semester or two of beginning their studies.

As with many comprehensive universities with specialized programs, the majority of students find their base in the College of Arts & Science or the School of Engineering.  Vanderbilt’s motto is Latin for “dare to grow” – and professors here push their already driven students to go beyond the curriculum and classroom learning to supplement their education with real life experience.

Maintaining a strong campus life is a priority for Vanderbilt University administrators; they’re aiming for nearly 100% of students to live on campus all four years, with just a few exceptions for seniors.  Recent new on-campus housing construction has made this possible.  About a third of Vanderbilt students join fraternities or sororities in the Greek system.  Vanderbilt University is definitely a “work hard, play hard” kind of school, and Nashville is an amazing location.

Evelyn, Debbie, Diane and Lesa visited Vanderbilt University in fall, 2019, and we’ve had students attend!  You can scroll through all of the photos from their visit below.
