Colgate University

Colgate University montageYou’ll be in shape pretty quickly if you commit to Colgate University!  This beautiful campus in Hamilton, NY will have you walking up and down stairs and hills on the daily.  Colgate is on the larger side for a small liberal arts college, with just over 3,000 undergraduates, but the campus feels like the school is larger.

Housing is available all four years here; most students live on campus but it’s possible to live off campus if you want during your senior year.  About a third of students join fraternities and sororities, and those organizations do have their own houses, which are considered on-campus.

Colgate University has strong pre-professional advising for pre-med and pre-law students.  Because of the small-town location, students interested can volunteer as a firefighter or paramedic, and those interested in education can find opportunities to be in local classrooms early in their time here.  The active career services office is supported by an incredibly strong alumni network that helps graduates find their first or next job.  Colgate also offers competitive funding opportunities for students who have underpaid (or unpaid) internships during the summer, to cover housing and other expenses.

Students say that the family feel on campus, the close connection with peers and faculty, is one of their favorite parts of attending Colgate University.  Because of its size, Colgate professors have the time to really get to know their students, what drives them and how they want to impact the world.  Undergraduates are the focus here; there are no TAs and faculty are leaders in their field.  For example, Colgate is the only university that offers students the opportunity to work at the National Institutes of Health for a full semester for academic credit.

Campus life is active – the athletic teams here compete at the Division 1 level in the Patriot League, and about 20% of students are involved in varsity athletics.  Despite its location in upstate New York (the closest major airport is Syracuse, about an hour’s drive), Colgate gets prominent speakers on a regular basis.

Colgate is highly selective, admitting about 12% of their applicant pool.  They’re test-optional through the (high school) Class of 2026.  Colgate fills 100% of demonstrated financial need, but unfortunately does not offer any merit-based scholarships.

Fay has visited Colgate multiple times, and 10 of our counselors visited during the spring of 2024.  You can scroll through our photo album of this beautiful campus below.
