Pomona College

Pomona College is a private liberal arts college located in Claremont, California, known for its picturesque campus and rigorous academic environment.  Claremont is conveniently located about 30 miles east of Los Angeles, making it easily accessible for students who want to explore the cultural, entertainment, and professional opportunities of a major city while enjoying a more suburban campus environment.

Academics at Pomona College

At Pomona College, students have the advantages of a small college, where the average class size is 15 students, and professors teach every class, along with the opportunities offered by a larger university setting of about 8,000 students.  Pomona College emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, allowing students to combine multiple fields of study.  Examples include the Environmental Analysis Program, which integrates environmental science, policy, and economics, and the Media Studies Program, which combines theory and practice in media and communication.

Pomona emphasizes undergraduate research across all disciplines, and students are encouraged to seek opportunities to engage in research projects alongside faculty members both on and off campus, fostering hands-on learning and academic inquiry.

First year students are introduced to Pomona’s intellectual community through Critical Inquiry Seminars, which are small, discussion-based courses designed to foster critical thinking and intellectual exploration.  They cover a wide range of topics and are led by faculty who are experts in their fields.  Topics vary, but the goal is the same in all 31 sections. Students learn to engage in college-level discussion, writing and reading, in the context of a small seminar.  They explore ideas, challenge existing knowledge and question assumptions from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The residential component is an important part of the residential experience.  First-year students are grouped into small sponsor groups with two sophomore mentors.  You’ll meet a built-in cohort the moment you step on campus (not to mention the friends you’ll make during Orientation Adventure).

Pomona College is one of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions that make up the unique 5C consortium.  The other undergraduate colleges are Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer and Scripps Colleges.  Located within one square mile, the seven adjoining campuses are only a short walk from one another, and students may take any of the 2,700 classes offered at any of the undergraduate Claremont Colleges.  Although each institution is autonomous, academic calendars and registration procedures are coordinated to make cross-registration easy.  The colleges also share clubs and organizations, adding to academic and co-curricular opportunities.

Admission to Pomona College

The admissions process is holistic, considering not only academic achievements but also extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and personal qualities that contribute to the campus community.  The college values diversity and looks for students from varied backgrounds who will enrich the campus environment through their perspectives and experiences.  Admissions decisions also take into account how well prospective students align with the college’s values, mission, and commitment to intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and interdisciplinary learning.
