An Interview With College Counselor Suzie Wynne

Suzie Wynne has been with Magellan College Counseling since 2014.  Prior to becoming a college counselor, Suzie practiced law, so her research, writing and communication skills are sharp.

Suzie brings both the compassion of a parent as well as the expertise of a seasoned professional as she works with families.  The oldest of her three children graduated from Bradley University with an engineering degree.  Her middle child will graduate from NYU with a BFA in Drama and a minor in Business of Entertainment, Media, and Technology this fall, and her youngest is in 9th grade.

I interviewed Suzie as part of Magellan’s livestream interview series, and asked her to give me her best tips for a successful college application process.  Having watched Suzie work with students for six-plus years, I have seen how effective she is.  Here are a few things parents have said about her work:

“Suzie’s knowledge was immense and her ability to tailor her work to fit our daughter’s needs is what made the experience such a positive one.  And Suzie was able to help put together a list of colleges and universities that were a good fit for our daughter which was unbelievably helpful.”

“She helped to manage expectations, keep my son on track and help direct my son to schools that he might not have originally considered.  The college application process is very daunting and I am thankful to Suzie Wynne and Magellan for holding our hand through the entire process.”

“Suzie figured out exactly what type of help our daughter needed and went to work.  She helped her structure her time and gave her excellent advice when it came to fine tuning her essays.”

As one of the veterans on the Magellan team, Suzie has also been a mentor to the newer counselors who have joined more recently.  Part of our process is to circulate our students’ essays when they are close to final to counselors on our team who don’t know the student.  In this way, we can emulate how admission offices, who don’t spend time with each applicant as we do, review students’ essays for the first time.  Suzie is a trusted part of this process.

I think you’ll find her tips in this interview helpful, as you prepare to help your own child through the college admission process.  Thank you for relying on Magellan College Counseling for up-to-date information about how the world of college admissions is changing!
